  1. To give its citizens a paper-free and a hassle-free governance, the Narendra Modi-led Government is inching towards making India Digital. However, to make this a reality, the Department of Electronics and Information Technology (DeitY) rolled out a beta version of the ‘Digital Locker’ on Tuesday. This facility will allow fellow citizens to keep all their important documents like certificates, including birth certificate, university degrees and many more such vital documents in a digital format online. People can access them using their Aadhaar numbers.

To try the beta version of the Digital Locker — a user needs to create a login account at its website using his/her Aadhaar card, or Unique Identification (UID) number.

The Department of Electronics and Information Technology (DeitY), has invited comments from users on the Government’s idea crowdsourcing platform myGov.in. The Digital Locker scheme envisions placing educational, medical, passport and PAN card details of every Indian in a digital form.

“Digital locker will allow you to securely upload and share your documents anytime, anywhere to authorised users/agencies. The issuer departments will also be able to automatically push the link of your document kept in their repositories,” the website says. The beta version of the locker is being maintained by the Maharashtra Government and Tata Consultancy Services.

The sole purpose of the entire exercise is to end the hassle of carrying these documents for any Government related projects or even personal purposes. A user can access the document from anywhere across the country.

DeitY falls under the Ministry of Telecom and Information Technology.

This scheme will be welcomed by one and all as it will be a breather because it will also save time and resources. Moreover, it is a flagship scheme running under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Digitial India Programme.

According to a PTI report, Telecom Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad, Centre’s Digital India Programme will create over five crore jobs once it is complete. Digital India is an umbrella programme of the Government comprising various projects worth about Rs 1 lakh crore to transform the country into a knowledge economy.

The programme includes projects that aim to ensure easy access to technology infrastructure and Government services are to citizens.
